Leny Andrade returns to Birdland

By 30 July, 2010

Multi-talented songstress Leny Andrade will be returning to Birland in New York for five nights from August 31st until September 4th. The singer will be performing bossa novas from her native Brazil as well as Boleros (she spent some years living in Mexico), all with a distinctive jazz flavour. She has been described by Tony Bennett as “the Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil”.

Andrade has just released a new CD, Alma Mia showcasing her interest in boleros. Oft-referred to as “the Queen of Bossa Nova” from Rio she will be performing these concerts with production from Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta.

“To describe Ms. Andrade as both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova only goes so far in evoking a performer whose voice seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil…like everything else she performs, it seems to well up from the center of the earth.”

– Stephen Holden, The New York Times

“I can sing the sun, I can sing the sea, and the things of art and romance…without romance, there is nothing to do in this life.”

– Leny Andrade

Ms. Andrade will be joined by the very talented Klaus Mueller on Piano, Sergio Brandao on Bass and Helio Schiavo on Drums.

The concerts, entitled “Bossa, Boleros and Jazz,” are sponsored by Delta Airlines. They fly to 4 different destinations in Brazil: Rio, Sao Paulo, Manaos and Brasilia. There are connects to the rest of the country as well. The media sponsor is The Brasilians Newspaper.
