Download: Siempre Fresco! Los Rakas remixed by DJ Sonora

By 13 August, 2012

There is no question hip hop, reggae and Latin music continue to evolve and a couple of Panamanian Americans are taking it further by combining all three.

Raka Rich and Raka Dun are cousins who grew up in Panama before spending their teenage years in Oakland, California. Los Rakas put a distinctive “Panabay” twist on hip-hop and reggae, bridging the streetwise sounds of the places they’ve called home.

They put it best on their website: “Los Rakas make music born of migration and tradition, critique and celebration, joy and pain. They make New World music. American music. Panamanian Jamaican Californian music. Music for b-boys and rude boys, dancers and romancers, mainlanders and islanders and isthmus folk alike.”

Indeed.

Now Los Rakas’ music has evolved by way of the remix with the help of “electropical” producer powerhouse, Sonora, from San Antonio, Texas. Part of the Peligrosa DJ crew, Sonora is a producer of Latin and third world/global bass music.

He puts an electropical twist on some of some of Los Rakas’ biggest hits here. Download them here. And score some of Sonora’s other remixes here.

Tour dates for Los Rakas, which includes several cities in California, Chicago, Illinois, and a performance in Mexico City this fall, can be found on their site.
