As part of a fundraising week to collect funds to renew Resonance FM radio’s license, Latin Waves have organised a screening of Tropicalia at the Roxy in South London.
Tropicalia tells the story of an important period in Brazilian music as artists like Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil changed the whole definition of what Brazilian music was and what it stood for. The film, directed by Marcelo Machado, is a visceral portrait of 1967-69, ending with Veloso and Gil’s exile in London and looking at the legacy they left. Far from a simple ‘talking heads’ style music documentary this film really brings you into the creativity, social and political backdrop, and the lives of the characters who brought about this musical revolution.
