Madame Satã is a figure of mythological dimension for Brazilian queers. A man before his time, he was a hustler in Lapa, the legendary Bohemian neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the 20th century. Satã worked as cook and a bouncer, and decided to give up hustling and petty crime when he got his first gig as drag performer, but fate got in the way.
