Living a lifetime against the law, where there is no safe place to hide and where you only have one choice of killing or being killed is perfect entertaining fare for a TV series. During the past decade, the stories of the most infamous kings of the dark side, mainly from Mexico and Colombia, have been pictured in many different movies and TV series. If you thought that you’d like to find out more about their lives, the following titles are a must.

Narcos

The first two seasons of Narcos tell the incredible story of the notorious kingpin Pablo Escobar who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine. It also follows the interactions between Escobar and different drug lords, Drug Enforcement Administration agents and various opposition entities. Often called “The King of Cocaine”, he was the wealthiest criminal in history and one of the richest people in his prime. The third and final season of the series narrates the history of Cali Cartel as the legacy of Pablo Escobar goes on. The only place you could find gangsters as tough as they are portrayed in Narcos could only be a luxurious casino in the middle of Las Vegas, but you would have to go back in time a few decades.

El Chapo

El Chapo follows the steps of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán from his early days in the 1980s, working for the Guadalajara Cartel to his rise to power during the ’90s and his ultimate downfall in 2016. You’ll get to see a representation of his famous escape from the maximum security prison in 2015 through a tunnel dug by his gang. There are 3 seasons available which you can find on Netflix.

Pablo Escobar, the Drug Lord

Pablo Escobar, the Drug Lord is another TV show about the story of Pablo Escobar produced and broadcast on Caracol TV. It is only available in Spanish, but it does come with English subtitles. The series debuts with his humble beginnings as the son of a school teacher. It shows his initiation as a delinquent who stole tombstones and the way he entered in the business up to the point of his death. The influence his mother had upon him is being portrayed in the first episode and through the entire series. Pablo Escobar grows to be the wealthiest criminal and the most powerful man in Colombia. Watch his evolution from the very first few years of life until his last moments captured in 74 episodes.

Alias J.J.

Alias J.J or Surviving Escobar is a Colombian drama TV series created by Caracol TV. The show is based on the book written by John Jairo Velásquez, lieutenant and chief of Pablo Escobar’s band of assassins. In this series, the background of the action changes. The last survivor of the Medellin Cartel, the number one hitman of the Colombian mafia, surrenders to justice and struggles to stay alive in the prison while earning respect among other prisoners. It’s a battle for survival as he strives to get higher up in the hierarchy. There are 69 episodes available and all of them are very interesting.

El Cartel de Los Sapos

El Cartel de Los Sapos is a television series aired for the first time on the Colombian network Caracol TV back in 2008. It is a story based on the novel with the same name written by Andrés López López. The narrative revolves around 10 friends, all part of a dangerous drug cartel, who end up killing each other for money and power. There are 2 seasons you can watch, and each has about 50 episodes so get your popcorn ready because you are surely going to binge-watch this one!
