Back to Black Future

By 25 July, 2024

Cult post-punk band Black Future are (sort of) back in action. After the attention garnered from the release of the documentary Eu sou o Rio – Black Future at the international festival In-edit last month in São Paulo, the band from Rio de Janeiro have released the single “Eu quero tocar a Lapa” on the CopaSoul Discos label.

Recorded live at the BPM studio in December 2006, the single features the original members of Tantão and Márcio Bandeira with the participation of drummer Ronaldo Groove, who also produced the song, and percussionist Júnior Crispin. Directed by Paulo Severo, who directed the documentary, the music video shows a typically raw and energetic live performance of the band.

Black Future recorded their first and only LP in 1988, bringing to the national scene a local version of post-punk with a mix of lyrics inspired by the traditional bohemian Rio neighborhood of Lapa and comic books, which vocalist and lyricist Bandeira loved to read. The band were also one of the first to experiment with mixing samba with modern ’80s rock, generating the legendary track “Eu sou o Rio”, which was featured on the early 2000s compilation Não Wave: Brazilian Post Punk 1982 – 1988.

The lyrics of this new release return to the anti-postcard image of Rio de Janeiro that is present in the marginal Carioca imagination, a culture that is absent from official guide books.
