How does the South American entertainment industry absorb the culture of the region?
25 April, 2025The influence of South American culture on the development of the entertainment industry in this region is the most direct. It influences not only the content themes but also the way we consume it. For example, music and dance traditions are deeply rooted in society. Carnival in Brazil is one of the most significant cultural events. And at the same time, its various elements are used not only in advertising and TV shows, but also in computer games. International Argentine tango competitions are an incredible event, and the culture of Peruvian people inspires cosplay festivals.
Everyone knows about the television industry in South America, especially Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. Yet, the sector’s development is also closely tied to local archetypes. Telenovelas from Latin America are known widely and are usually based on conflicts between modernity and tradition. These stories are exported to many countries worldwide, and some have even been adapted. In addition, regional cultural codes are used, which are understood globally but in a Latin American context.
South American cultural characteristics are increasingly being integrated into the video game industry. In Brazil and Argentina, for example, many independent studios have emerged in recent years, creating stories with a local context. Visual novels based on urban legends are pretty popular in Argentina. South American characters also often appear in international franchises.
Sports also play an important role in the South American entertainment industry, which is only natural considering how many great soccer players the region has given the world. Soccer matches of even local teams attract a lot of fans. They also turn into festivals on a larger or smaller scale. Marketing, show business, and even the music industry actively use elements of soccer culture. For example, many popular Latin American artists shoot music videos in stadiums.
Speaking of sports, we should not forget that cricket has been gaining popularity lately. In particular, this is due to the growing number of newcomers from India in this region, who, among other things, brought with them the culture of betting on cricket matches. If the statistics of local bookmakers are to be believed, the most bets in terms of cricket are placed on the IPL. Today, locals can easily download Indian Premier League betting apps and start betting online. Currently, in many Latin American countries, the betting market is not regulated in any way, so many locals have no problem registering with foreign bookmakers.
Cybersport is also actively developing in South America. Chile, Argentina, and Brazil host major cybersport tournaments on popular games. In addition, teams from the region participate in international competitions. Brazilian streamers who play the games are also popular and garner multi-million dollar audiences. Interestingly, in the region, cybersports is becoming part of the city’s culture with its festivals, merch, and themed cafes.
