Why is it called the Caribbean?

Columbus gave a name to the tribe, which was Carib, and with the passage of time, Carib turned into the Caribbean. The geography and climate of the Caribbean
The Caribbean is situated in the South-Eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico and is spread for over 1000 miles from north to south and 2500 miles in the west from east. A massive portion of the Caribbean is water bodies which is the primary reason that there are over 700 islands, cays and reefs that are part of the Caribbean. There is an excellent diversity of topography in the Caribbean as it includes waterfalls, volcanoes, tropical forests, coral reefs, mountains and valleys.
It is quite surprising that the inhabitants have taken up only 2% of the total area in the Caribbean and that 2% includes 32 countries. Islands are the top attractions of the Caribbean, and there are four major islands groups; Windward Islands, Leeward Antilles, Greater Antilles and the Leeward Islands. The Windward Islands, Leeward Islands and the Leeward Antilles have not been combined and are known as the Lesser Antilles.

There are several other countries also which are connected to the Caribbean because of their political and cultural influence. The island of Bermuda is also linked to the Caribbean region, even though it is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Caribbean Community, CARICOM, was formed in 1972 to enhances the coordination and cooperation between the member states. Five countries are a member of the community, and they are Guyana, Venezuela, Suriname and three countries located on the North Atlantic coast of South America.
Dependent and Independent Democracies
Most of the Caribbean countries have multiple political parties except Cuba. It has the only party and runs on a one-party political system. The governing system of these parties is highly inspired by colonial rule. Some democracies in the Caribbean are independent such as Haiti, which is also the first black republic in the world. It is also the first country that put an end to slavery after the France rule. However, there are still some Caribbean countries that are dependent on countries like France, United Kingdom, Netherlands and United States.

If we talk about the population of the Caribbean, it is over 42.5 million, which included the people living in over 30 islands. Some of the bigger islands, such as Cuba and Haiti, have a population of 11.4 million and 10.8 million, respectively.
