Listen Now: Abelardo Carbonó feat Quantic, ‘La Piña Madura’

By 27 July, 2018

Revered as the ‘Godfather of Champeta’, Abelardo Carbonó, is the latest in a growing line of Colombian artists to team up with British producer Quantic.

Best known for a motley catalogue of styles, mesmeric guitar skills and psychedelic flavours, Carbonó’s presence has perhaps not been as megalithic as it might have. Barring a compilation album pulling together some his best work from the ’80’s, his music has mainly been found in live performances; belting out from venues and sound systems across his native Barranquilla on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Carbonó’s influence has however been felt through Colombian music far and wide.

Alas, this gem, brought to us in a collaboration between Palenque Records and Polen Records, and released through Names You Can Trust, is arguably all the more precious then by way of its recorded rarity. Complimenting Carbonó’s powerful vocal / guitar combo, “La Piña Madura” draws on the musicianship of Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero) and Will ‘Quantic’ Holland (Rhythm Guitar) as it brings a tropical afrobeat to the table in its spectacular interpretation of a classic vallenato track.

Available on 7 inch vinyl via the Names You Can Trust bandcamp, here is hoping we’re treated to more from Carbonó in the not too distant future. In the meantime however, head over and feast your ears on the remix compilation from fellow Barranquillero Pernett, released earlier this year in honour of psychedelic champeta’s undisputed king.
