Mexican Institute of Sound Give Run The Jewels a Cumbia Makeover

By 15 January, 2021

Pioneering Mexican electronic project Mexican Institute of Sound, the brainchild of Camilo Lara, have dropped an official remix of “Ooh La La”, one of the standout tracks from Run The Jewels‘ last album RTJ4. In the new version MIS add mariachi horns, a cumbia beat and a Spanish-language verse, showcasing the talents of rising Mexican rapero Santa Fe Klan.

Discussing the remix, which recalls the big beat edits that Fatboy Slim and Dust Brothers were so good at in the 90s, Lara said: “Making the global dance floor a united, inclusive and explosive space where everyone is welcome is the mission that connects me to Run The Jewels. Inviting Santa Fe Klan to the adventure was crucial: his voice unites Guanajuato, Brooklyn, Mexico City and Atlanta. Turn up the volume and jump immediately: ooh lalá, papa… ooh lalá!”

Mexican Institute of Sound’s upcoming album, Distrito Federal, is due for release on February 5.
