Rizomagic – Voltaje Raizal (LP)

£19.00

We absolutely love the debut album from Rizomagic, a new duo comprised of Diego Manrique and Edgar Marún, and one of the most exciting new tropical music projects in Bogotá. Rizomagic have taken inspiration from Larry Achiampong’s way of using sampling to create very personal, danceable work; in Rizomagic’s case this meant taking inspiration from cumbia, Pacific coast music, indigenous chants, afrobeat and much more, to create dizzyingly-infectious new grooves, as well as a few moments of transcendence for good measure. A top notch debut!

Press Release: “The sounds of the album are rooted in Afro-Caribbean musical traditions, in the mixed ancestry that defines Colombian culture, and IDM. The melodic construction of the album takes inspiration from various cultures, including Indigenous chants from Colombia’s Embera people, the traditional scales from Mali’s Bambara ethnic group, and the Ghanaian palm wine guitar interpreted by a Caribbean millo flute. The mix and mastering carried out by Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers, Los Pirañas, Chupame el Dedo) and Camilo Manchego offers the final touches that make Voltaje Raizal a fresh proposal on Colombia’s futurist tropical scene. Rizomagic set out to recontextualize their sources. It’s no coincidence that their name comes from rhizomatic, the botanically derived term for a subterranean, horizontal network of roots”
