6 Types of Dancing You Should Try

By 05 June, 2023

Life is meant to be full of new experiences. Going through the same routine day after day and never trying anything new is a recipe for mental health deterioration, as burnout is a common symptom of a repetitive and unfulfilling lifestyle. Exploring new places or engaging in new activities can be a simple way to reinvigorate yourself.

Let’s talk about dancing. Dancing is a physical activity that can contribute to overall health. Not only is it fun to get out on the floor and show the world what kind of moves you know, but it can also help you connect to music differently. Plus, if you take on dancing with a spouse or partner, it can build up your relationship with them as you both learn the steps and rhythms of the music.

There are many different types of dancing that you can learn from various segments of the world. Whether you are traveling in foreign countries or taking lessons in your own community, it can be fascinating to learn how to dance to specific genres of music. Let’s take a look at six types of dancing that you should try out for a new and healthy experience.

Salsa

Salsa is a unique form of dance because it combines elements from several cultures into one style. It became popular in New York City in the 1960s as a dance style with Cuban history but also combined with some American forms like swing and tap. Salsa dancing is often characterized by its fast turns and intricate arm movements. It is a common theme for the leader to encourage the follower to cross the dance floor with various turn patterns. This Latin dance style is popular around the world, and you can get a taste of many genres of Latin music at the La Linea Festival in London

Foxtrot

This style of dance became popular in the 1910s and was one of the most well-known fast dances for around thirty years. The Foxtrot can be recognized by its long, flowing movements across the dance floor that are typically continuous. Additionally, this genre of dance features music played by large bands. Foxtrot is a very graceful style of dancing that is taught in many ballroom class settings, so you can probably find a place to learn this activity in nearby cities.

Country Swing

If you spend any time in places like Nashville, then embracing the fun of Country Swing might be a necessary part of your travels. This style of dance is called a spot dance, which means there is little movement around the floor. It is a sub-genre of Western dancing that developed in the late 1920s. Country Swing lessons can be incredibly fun and relaxing, so if you ever find yourself in the Music City in Tennessee, look for a studio where you and your partner can engage in a new activity.

Samba

Samba is an Afro-Brazilian dance style that became popular in the United States in the 1940s. This partner dance features simple forward and backward steps with a lit of tilting and rocking body movements. Different styles of Samba can be danced either in a group or duo, and partner dances may stay in one spot or move around the floor, making it a versatile genre of dancing.

Waltz

Waltz means to roll or revolve, which is a perfect way to describe this dancing style. Dancers tend to lengthen their steps as much as possible, and there is often a step-slide-step rhythm to the music. This slow, smooth dance is often considered one of the easiest to learn because of its simple nature, and learning variations of it is not very complicated. Often, waltzes are performed in grand ballrooms and are considered a more elegant form of ballroom dancing.

Modern

In the early 20th century, many dancers were unsatisfied with the rigid rules of styles like ballet. A broad genre of dancing began to form that was far more expressive than many other styles and became known as modern dancing. It encompasses many sub-genres, including religious, folk, social, and others. What started as a rebellious movement has now developed into its own unique art form that requires intense strength and coordination. Learning modern dance may not be for everyone, but those who find a passion for it will learn a very unique style.

What Style Fits Your Personality?

Although learning how to dance is meant to push you out of your comfort zone, you can still choose a style that fits your personality. Those who prefer fast and intricate movements may prefer Salsa, while those that want to move slowly and gracefully will enjoy a Waltz. No matter which style you decide to learn, connecting to music through body movements can be an exciting experience. As a bonus, you will be getting physical exercise that improves your blood flow, flexibility, strength, balance, and heart health.
