If you’re planning a trip or cruise but haven’t organized your itinerary, don’t forget the best places to visit in South America.

With its lush rainforests, vibrant cities, and colorful history, South America is a growing tourist attraction that more and more people are trying to see. Since it’s an entire continent, there’s an almost unlimited number of great destinations to check out.

Luckily for you, we’ve distilled that list into the best of the best. This list isn’t exhaustive but it’s definitely the perfect starting point. So continue reading and learn about the best places to visit in South America for your next vacation.

Machu Picchu, Peru

One of the most visually striking landmarks of South America, this sacred city was first built in the 1400s and then later abandoned. You can only reach this important piece of architecture by going on a 27-mile hike through the Inca Trail or by train.

There are over 200 ceremonial, agricultural, religious, and astronomical structures at the site. When you finish your Machu Picchu excursion, we recommend sleeping in the nearby village of Cusco.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

One of the world’s ultimate party cities, Rio de Janeiro sports beautiful mountains as well as warm and sandy beaches. One of it’s most defining structures is the can’t-miss, 98-foot-high Christ the Redeemer statue at the peak of Mount Corcovado.

Every February, the city hosts its famous Carnival Celebration, the biggest carnival in the world. And if you’re still not sure what to do in the city, we recommend that you hop on an all inclusive cruise and have some fun that way!

Patagonia

No, it’s not just an expensive jacket company. It’s also a famous region in South America. Some of the continent’s most beautiful scenery can be found here in Patagonia. It’s important to point out that the region is a combination of parts of Chile and Argentina. This region also houses Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. There’s also Porvenir, a little village that’s famous for its scenic landscapes and Victorian-style homes.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Landing on the border of Argentina and Uruguay, Buenos Aires boasts a unique balance of European and South American styles and traditions. Sometimes referred to as the “Paris of South America”, it features modern museums, large avenues, and neoclassical buildings. You can also shop at the many boutiques in San Telmo, watch the horses race at Palermo Hippodrome, and also visit the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Because the continent is so diverse and large, you definitely need to do some planning before making the trek south. To find the best places to visit in South America for you, you need to first figure out what you’re interested in. And whether it’s fancy museums, long hikes, or just relaxing on the beach, South America really has it all. Are you looking for other interesting and helpful articles regarding all things South America? Keep browsing our blog today for more!
