CON ALMA 32: Kaleema
01 June, 2021Kaleema is Heidi Lewandowski-a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and singer from Buenos Aires who’s planted herself deep in Latin America’s dank, dazzling downtempo scene. Since 2017’s acclaimed debut album Nomada, a hypnotic whirr of contemporary electronics and organic instrumentation, the BA artist has been sky-rocketed to renowned stages, wherefrom she’s rubbed shoulders with a coterie of Latinx royalty such as Chancha Via Circuito, Mateo Kingman and Lido Pimienta.
With this year’s Útera delighting as much as Nomada, Lewandowski has secured her place as one of the Americas’ most erudite electronic composers. Her songs are introspective yet immense, spectral and evasive yet utterly immersive. Indeed, Kaleema’s mutable sound-world, which flutters from Andean flutes to shadowy dub, befits bassy club-nights as it does meditative mornings. And we are overjoyed to have the masterful musician sit in for this morning’s Con Alma Mixtape.
“The mixtape is a journey through fresh experimental and downtempo sounds by my favourite artists, mixed with some of my new tracks from the LP I released this year through Wonderwheel Recordings. I wanted to create a playful environment where some of the tracks are great for the dancefloor while others invite the listener to enjoy the melodies and the sonic landscape in a more contemplative moment.”

The Con Alma series is a mug of hot coffee served fortnightly on Monday mornings, to start your week off right. An hour of musical soul food, downtempo undulations and freshly-squeezed groovers that’s good for the heart, mind and body. Although the series’ name is taken from Dizzy Gillespie’s Latin standard, don’t expect an hour of frenetic bebop – this is gentle introspection, warm sunrises, shower sing-a-longs… always with plenty of soul.
