Alessandra Leão E O Xamba Coletivo

By 26 July, 2011

New video from Vincent Moon’s Petites Planetes series. This one is an outtake – albeit one that is better than most published takes – of Alessandra Leão and a group labelled the Xamba Coletivo partaking in a song and dance ritual from the Xamba religion (or Nação).

Here’s how Vincent describes the film, which was recorded in Recife in February 2011:

It started with the desire to do something around the Candomblé traditions. Not filming a candomblé ritual, but organizing something else, in the space of candomblé – in this case, in the beautiful terreiro Xamba. I was in Recife, in the north east of Brazil, staying at Alessandra’s place. We decided to bring a lot of her musical friends to perform and improvise an hour of religous songs. Here is the result of our own ritual.
