What’s happening (in London town late summer)?

By 17 August, 2026

First, though, some information on how to help victims of the Colombian earthquake. There’s an Instagram initiative to channel aid direct to Choco, the quake’s epicentre and one of the poorest departments in Colombia, but this involves a transfer directly into a Colombian account. Otherwise, there’s the Colombian Red Cross. The site is in Spanish, but quite straightforward. Finally, a Google employee has launched a gofundme appeal to raise $8,000, which the company has pledged to match.

That excellent Afro-Colombian psycho-Tropical (or however you want to label it) outfit Pambelé will be appearing under the Movimientos banner at the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham on August 30th. The earliest birds tickets have sold out, but others haven’t, so hurry, hurry, hurry. The group will be supported by some fine DJ sounds from Cuba, Argentina and elsewhere. Should be a good ‘un.

There’ll be some more enticing DJ sounds going on in Hackney at the Jago on Saturday night, September 19th, this time under the aegis of Candela Wax, whose founders Moralito and Cal Jeder will be hosting the decks along with special guest, DJ Tiki Boom. More information and tickets here.

Meanwhile, upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s in dear old Soho, the Viva Cuba Late Late Show will take place on Friday, 21st August, 28th August, 4th September, 11th September… I see a pattern emerging! Yes, every Friday night from 11.15pm. Get yer loverly tickets ‘ere!

Among the acts in a packed programme, there are a few of particular interest to Latin music fans. The Late Late Show on Tuesday, 8th September, features Marlon the Pannist, founder of Endurance Steel Orchestra among other notable credits. A great opportunity to listen to an instrument synonymous with the musician’s Caribbean heritage. On Sunday, 20th September, there are two concerts by Buena Vista Live, with UK-based Cuban musicians channeling the spirit of the original phenomenon. Friday, 2nd October, sees Almanaque take the stage with their fusion of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and contemporary jazz. Finally, there’s ALA.NI, an artists as interesting and un-classifiable as the French label she records for, NØ FORMAT! She’ll be giving two concerts on Tuesday, 20th October, to highlight her most recent album, Sunshine Music, inspired by and recorded in the Caribbean.
