What’s happening (in SE5 early this August)?

There’s a brand new festival south of the river in London town. South London Miniteca’s the name; Latin (and Portuguese) music’s the game, along with food, dancing, workshops and community stuff. It’s happening on Friday, 7th August, in Burgess Park – which is a new green space on me. Somewhere near the Old Kent Road, it would seem. What’s more, it’s completely free – although you’ll probably need to pay for the “incredible street food”.

Among the attractions assembled under the banner of Como No! and Southwark Council are the splendid Son Rompe Pera, Latinas of London, DJ Sueño and Las Salseras, with their tribute to Celia Cruz. And for fans of heavy global bass music, Lisbon’s Buraka Som Sistema will be putting in their first live appearance for a decade as part of a run of festival dates they’ve signed up for.
