Sophia Ardessore – Boitatá: A Sounds & Colours single premiere

By 14 October, 2026

Sophia Ardessore is a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist from São Paulo. Sounds & Colours present a premiere of her brand new single “Boitatá”, a song that previews her second album, O Ventre Que Me Inventou, and starts a new phase in her songwriting career. The track emerged from a creative collaboration between Ardessore and Francisca Barreto while exploring the symbolic universe shaped by tarot and Brazilian folklore. This idea originated from the figure of the Boitatá, a fire serpent from Brazilian popular folklore associated with protecting the forests. “The same fire that burns in the Boitatá also protects the forest from garimpeiros [clandestine prospectors],” Sophia says. The image of fire as both destructive and protective reflects the dualities running through the track and serves as a starting point for the conceptual universe of her new work. The dark slinky bassline was derived from drawing the devil tarot card one night, and subsequently researching symbolic references associated with the card, eventually leading them towards the imagery of Brazilian folklore. She says, “I took a course with Sula Turner where we studied Alejandro Jodorowsky’s map of the Major Arcana. In it, the Devil begins the row of transcendence. You have to visit your own hell in order to ‘transcend’.”
