Ameri’kana fest and Festival Cardinal set for this week
19 October, 2020Psych-rockers Making Movies, with the support of the Americana Music Association, are hosting a virtual event beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 21, AMERI’KANA: an exploration into American music over four nights of music, conversation, and music education livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook.
Featured artists include Making Movies, Los Lobos, Flor de Toloache, Cedric Burnside, Terrance and Marcella Simien, The Sensational Barnes Brothers, Deborah Barnes, Boo Mitchell, Rev. Charles Hodges, Kevin Morby, Samia, Luke Winslow-King, Martha Gonzalez, Nina Diaz, Addie Sartino, Brandon Yangmi, The Black Creatures and youth songwriters from The Rebel Song Academy. The event centers around the Oct 24th debut of AMERI’KANA TV, a living documentary exploring the American music story from its cultural context while reconnecting fractured narratives. AMERI’KANA TV goes live on the 4th night of AMERI’KANA, October 24th at 6 PM PST / 8 PM CST on YouTube and Facebook.
AMERI’KANA serves as a fundraiser for Art as Mentorship, a music education non-profit established by Enrique Chi of Making Movies.
“AMERI’KANA is a way for us to tell stories that have been lost in our music history,” says Juan-Carlos Chaurand, percussionist in Making Movies. “Let’s take an honest look at how this music came to be, and hear directly from those who inherited it.”
Diego Chi, bassist in Making Movies adds, “we all grow from experiencing just how deep, and rich the American story is. This is our story to tell.”
The band are also are releasing an EP called Tired of Giving In on all platforms Friday October 23rd, along with a music video for the title track. The EP includes two versions of the song: a full band version featuring Flor De Toloache and a live-in-studio acoustic version featuring The Sensational Barnes Brothers.
Festival Cardinal: 60 artists from 13 countries
Also happening this week, Festival Cardinal, which will bring 60 bands from 13 countries together for three days of music online, from the 23rd of October through the 25th. You can see the long list of performers here. We’re looking forward to Colombia’s Monsieur Periné and Dilemastronauta, real name Andres Jiminez, who is the drummer for Combo Chimbita.
