What’s happening this summer?
17 June, 2026Just a few rather tasty concerts to tell you about as we prepare to welcome summer…
Monty Alexander and Eliane Elias at Ronnie Scott’s
The wonderful Jamaican jazz pianist, Monty Alexander, is appearing next week at Ronnie’s in the heart of Soho, London. I saw him many, many moons ago at the Sheffield Leadmill with vocalist Marjorie Wylie in a celebration of jazz and Jamaican song, and it was a concert for the ages. There are still tickets for one of the shows on Monday 22nd June and both shows on Tuesday 23rd, so hurry hurry hurry if you fancy the prospect of seeing the veteran in action. Here’s one he certainly would have played that memorable night at the Leadmill…
Another impeccable jazz pianist – this one with a voice of lavender honey, to boot – is appearing at Ronnie’s in July. Former member of the Blue Note stable and Steps Ahead keyboards artist, the diminutive Brazilian giant, Eliane Elias, is booked for Wednesday 15th and Tuesday 16th July. Get yer lovely tickets here! And here she is performing a number that’s long been in her repertoire.
Goings-on at the Fox & Firkin
A couple of enticing events at the F&F under the Movimientos umbrella to tell you about. Nickodemus will join El Búho + Chancha Vía Circuito Day-to-Night party on Saturday, 4th July. Rooted in Latin, African, and Eastern instrumentation, his electronic sounds should certainly complement the other DJ sets scheduled to support the live acts and keep things on the good foot. You can find a link to tickets, samples of the music and more here.
A few months ago, I enthusiastically reviewed the France-based, seven-piece Afro-Colombian band Pambelé‘s album Dámelo for Songlines. The septet will be appearing at the Fox & Firkin on Sunday, 30th August. It looks like a really good event in prospect. Here’s more on the band, the Bank Holiday bash and how to get tickets.
That’s all for the moment, but there will be more. I’ll stake my livelihood on it.
