Brazilian MPB Singer Marisa Monte To Perform at London’s Hammersmith Apollo

By 25 February, 2013

Somehow trying to describe Marisa Monte in a simple heading (like above) doesn’t seem to do her justice. Without doubt Monte is one of Brazil’s best MPB singers. We’d even be tempted to stick our our necks and say that she IS the best. But she’s also a lot more, a champion of samba, a frequent collaborator on all manner of musical experiments and a great example for all other female Brazilian singers due to the fact that she has taken ownership of all of her songs so she can do what she likes with them, not what the record label wants to do!

On Sunday April 14th she will performing at London’s Hammersmith Apollo, performing songs from her most recent album O Que Você Quer Saber de Verdade, including hit single “Ainda Bem” (see video below). If you watched the London Olympics 2012 closing ceremony you will have seen Monte sing the classic Brazilian piece “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” dressed as a Yemanjá deity. You may also know Monte from Tribalistas, the hugely popular album she recorded with Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes which sold millions of copies in Brazil.

She has again teamed up with Brown and Antunes for her latest, with the duo helping to co-write many of the songs on the album. She also worked with Rodrigo Amarante and Marcelo Jeneci on the album, as well as Mario Caldato Jr and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on mixing and arranging duties respectively.
