EXCLUSIVE Stream of Riobamba & Uproot Andy’s ‘Bien Buena’ Radio Show featuring ÌFÉ This Wednesday

By 17 April, 2018

In February Riobamba and Uproot Andy launched a new collaboration, Bien Buena. This monthly Red Bull Radio show is an opportunity for the two producers/DJs would to show off their latest musical discoveries from Latin America and the Latin American migrant communities based around the world, and particularly in NYC, where they are based. Responsible for monumental tropical bass nights like Picó Picante and Que Bajo?!, and with deep ties to Latin America – Riobamba is half-Ecuadorian, Uproot Andy is a regular at Colombian carnival – these two are perfectly placed to offer a unique take on Latin music.

So, we are very happy to be able to bring you exclusively the third episode of Bien Buena, which features an interview with ÌFÉ’s Otura Mun. Regular readers of S&C will be well aware that ÌFÉ’s debut album IIII+IIII was our favourite album of 2017, so it will be interesting to hear what he has to say about the album’s reception and his groundbreaking take on electronic Puerto Rican music, along with some fine musical picks from Riobamba and Uproot Andy.

Episode 3 of Bien Buena featuring ÌFÉ will be aired on Wednesday April 18th at 4pm (NY), 8pm (London) and 1pm (LA).

You can listen to the show exclusively via Sounds and Colours on our Facebook page or using the widget below:

Wondering what Bien Buena is all about. Here’s Uproot Andy to give you the lowdown:

Bien Buena actually takes its name from the El General song “Te Ves Buena”, a seminal pre-reggaeton, dancehall en español song from Panama. The significance of this is that it references the direct connection between what is categorized as Latin music and non-Spanish Black Caribbean music. A big part of what we hope to do with Bien Buena is to frame Latin música urbana within the wider culture of African diaspora music and not as a simple language category.”

Riobamba goes further, seeing the show and her work in general as an opportunity to find much-needed space for Latin music, in all its guises, in the wider world:

“I feel that Latinx/Spanish-language music is always contending with being othered from documentation around club culture; I hope Bien Buena will reinforce the idea that these sounds deserve respect and visibility on equal footing as any other strain of music. Especially being in NYC, which has such a legacy as a home base for movement of people and sounds between Latin America, the Caribbean, and the diaspora (and it being where my family landed when they came to the States), it’s an honor for me to engage with and contribute to this history that I have so much respect for.”
