Maga Bo’s Quilombo do Futuro to be released on May 22nd
11 May, 2012What is sure to be one of the releases of the year, Maga Bo‘s Quilombo do Futuro is set to be released on May 22nd. For fans of tropical bass and Afro-Brazilian music this is quite an event. We’re definitely excited here at Sounds and Colours, and after having a sneak preview of the album are sure it’s going to live up to all the hype.
The album combines organic sounds and textures from Brazil with heavy bass lines, keeping it’s roots firmly in Afro-Brazilian culture, yet giving the songs a raw power that will doubtless sound great on the dancefloor. You can listen to some of his remixes of other people’s work here.
Born in the US and based in Rio de Janeiro since 1999, Maga Bo has recruited a ridiculous array of talent for this release, featuring established Brazilian artists such as BNegão, BaianaSystem, Gaspar, Lucas Santtana and Marcelo Yuka as well as lesser-known names including Funkero and Biguli, Mestre Camaleão on berimbau, Rosângela Macedo adding folkloric vocals and Maga Bo’s long-time partner João Hermeto. Guyanese Brooklynite Jahdan Blakkamoore, and Panamanian Chicagoite MC Zulu add their vocals to various tracks, adding a dancehall vibe to proceedings.
Here are the thoughts of DJ/Rupture, a man who always talks a lot of sense:
“Maga Bo’s new album is a tremendous piece of work. He focuses on the soulful vocals and rhythmic complexity of roots music in his home country, Brazil. It’s beautifully recorded and mixed. Maga Bo reimagines global bass music from the ultra-informed, local standpoint — which means we get glorious call& response vocals, supple drumming, subtle sub-bass whomp. In short, this is the first Brazilian album i’ve ever heard which is indispensable for purist fans of Afro-Brazilian folk music *and* every DJ interested in mashing up the dancefloor with heavyweight electronic riddims. That’s a big claim, but this is a big album”
