Get Ready for a Brazilian Summer in London12 June, 2018
We don’t know what it is but seemingly every few years it seems like half of Brazil passes through London as gig after gig of top quality Brazilian music gets confirmed for the capital. Maybe it’s a World Cup thing, maybe it’s because we all subconsciously need cheering up or at least shaking out of post-Brexit statis. Whatever the reason, we’re not complaining. Especially as this summer is looking very exciting indeed.
To start off with there are very special shows from two Brazilian legends, with Gilberto Gil performing his classic Refavela album (in a band featuring his son Bem Gil) and Caetano Veloso also playing the family card as he’ll be performing with all three of his sons for what looks to be a very intimate show. There will also be another Brazilian artist whose career goes back as far as Veloso’s and Gil’s with Ivan Lins playing a rare show at The Jazz Cafe. Brazilian soul singer Di Melo and MPB guitarist maestro João Bosco will also be in town.
The sounds of north-eastern Brazil will be on show in the shape of the incredible BaianaSystem – expect a booming, energy-filled show – and Renata Rosa, who has been making contemporary north-eastern Brazilian folk music for many years. There’s also two top hip-hop gigs with Marcelo D2 and Gabriel O Pensador both heading back to London after successful recent concerts. And, we should also say that Brazilian funk-pop sensation Anitta is in town too if that’s your bag.
Finally, our maximum kudos will be given to anyone who c0mpletes the week of Brazilian gigs from Friday 22nd until Saturday 30th June. That’s 7 gigs in 9 nights. Anyone game?
