The other side of Seu Jorge
09 May, 2026The Amor in Sound label has just released digitally (with vinyl to follow on the 10th July) The Other Side, Seu Jorge’s new album that has been 16 years in the making. I’ve only dipped my toes into it thus far, but it sounds well worth the wait. The singer-songwriter with the rich and fruity voice that suggests a Brazilian Gregory Porter with a sore throat (perhaps) has put together a homage to his country’s bossa nova, MPB and jazz traditions with a remarkable line-up of guests. Marissa Monte, for example, sings on the original “Quando Chego”, while Beck appears on a cover of Nick Drake’s exquisite “River Man” and Zap Mama guests on “Far From The Sea”. Here he is in a duet with Maria Rita on one of the album’s three singles, a version of “Vento do Maio”, a classic by the guest’s mother, Elis Regina.
The album was recorded in LA and produced by Mario Caldato jr., the man forever associated with the Beastie Boys’ classic records, as well as Seu Jorge’s debut, Cru. The lush orchestral arrangements are the work of the composer and multi-instrumentalist, Miguel Atwood Ferguson. The singer’s original numbers are fleshed out by covers of Milton Nascimento, Arthur Verocai and more, so The Other Side promises to be quite a landmark release.
Right, excuse me while I find a quiet spot and some time to listen at leisure to the album…
