Mestizmo’s Socaribe Mixtape

By 16 October, 2013

Winding its way into the S&C offices all the way from San Francisco, California, comes this new mixtape from our good friend Mestizmo. Channeling many of the finest elements of Caribbean and Latin American roots music, infused with contemporary spirit, this is a sizzling medley of tropical beats and steamy breaks, all lovingly compiled into one superb extended mix. But don’t just take our word for it: let’s allow Mestizmo himself to introduce his new Socaribe Mixtape:

“Greetings from the soul of the Caribbean! This mix takes us on a nautical voyage from islands to mainland, from tradition to mainstream. Sweet sounds ringing out from Trinidad, Colombia, Haiti, Venezuela, and Jamaica stringing together styles of soca, calypso, cumbia, porro, and dancehall!

“Socaribe” features a number of legendary musicians lending us rhythms to move our bodies. One in particular being the sensational Lord Shorty. As he sings:

‘I can’t play, I can’t write, music / Yet everyday, and every night, I create it / My system is rhythm, simplicity, and melody / My tunes are happy, and the music sweet / If you don’t dig the melody you will dig the beat’

Enjoy this mix as a testament to the cultural, religious, and spiritual power of the Caribbean. This mix is by no means an all-inclusive guide to the region’s rich musical history, moreover a non-stop party playlist with a unique take on how tradition shifts the current.

The artwork is a digital version of a painting illustrated by Haitian artist Jean Bruno Louisius.  More information about the artist and further works can be found here:
