Mito y Comadre: New music from Venezuela

By 17 October, 2023

Here’s a beautiful and thought-provoking video to accompany the release on the 18th October of the second single from the debut album of a new act fusing electronica with traditional music from their homeland. The duo Mito y Comadre represent the first Venezuelan act signed to ZZK Records and their debut album, Guajirando, is scheduled for vinyl and digital release in mid November.

Animated and directed by the Peruvian studio Tenis, the video is a sensitive and imaginative portrayal of the migrant’s journey to a new land. Guillermo Lares (el Mito) and Shanna (la Comadre) met in Bogotá and both are keenly aware of the whole issue of trans-global migration. For Shanna, making the album “was like connecting with my homeland again.” Written by Lares, the new single translates as “I feel sorrow” and was inspired by memories of “the place where I was born and my mother.” “It’s a chance,” he goes on, “to bring some hope, some joy.” Immersed since childhood in the traditional music of his native Venezuela, he started to experiment by fusing it with electronica and hopes that their hybrid will “expand far and wide… expand that Venezuelan thing.” As Shanna puts it, “You get a connection between the land and modern stuff.”

On the evidence of the first two singles, it’s a palpable connection that seems both joyful and organic. I look forward very much to the forthcoming album.
