Fania classics covered by Elastic Bond and Making Movies

By 09 December, 2015

We listen to classic songs of the Fania record label all the time, so we had to share these two covers by two of our favorite Latin American bands in the States.

Miami’s Elastic Bond (check out this cumbia of theirs we posted two years ago) pays homage to none other than the queen of salsa, Celia Cruz, with a beautiful cover of “Todos Somos Iguales.” The song about humans all being the same couldn’t come at a more perfect time at a time when much of the United States and Europe grapple with some anti-immigrant sentiments and issues of race. Elastic Bond slowed the song down a touch, and somehow found a way to infuse a more of a rustic, Caribbean goodness into it.

We should mention the Elastic Bond cover is a part of a new series Fania Records has introduced in collaboration with Sol Society Recordings as part of the “Fania Wynwood Sessions.” Look out for them by following Fania. And for a different take on the song, check out this Cumba Mela remix of “Todos Somos Iguales.” Good stuff!

Unrelated to that Fania/Sol Society collaboration comes a cover of Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe’s “La Murga” by Kansas City’s Making Movies, whom, you may recall, put out a fantastic cover of “Aguanile” in 2014.

The band frequently cover Fania classics when performing as “Making Movies Social Club,” even hosting a concert in tribute to the record labels’ best stuff from the 1970s.

In a recent in-studio performance and interview with their local public radio station, The Bridge, the quartet performed “La Murga,” even adding a fifth member by way of violinist who really tears those strings at 2:50. Watch below, and keep up with Making Movies on their website.
