Roberto Fonseca Releases New Album; Announces Extensive European Tour
06 November, 2019With a new album, Yesun, just released that sees Roberto Fonseca delve into rap, funk, reggaeton and electronica, alongside his usual pillars of Cuba, Africa and forward-thinking jazz, it’s an exciting time for Roberto Fonseca fans, especially if you live in Europe, with a stack of shows already announced for this winter and early 2020.
Fonseca burst on to the scene in the early 2000s as a piano prodigy before establishing himself as a stalwart of Cuban music through working with Buena Vista Social Club, Ibraham Ferrér, Cachaíto, Omara Portuondo and many other Cuban musical legends. He then embarked on a solo career that has seen him push Cuban music to its limits, consistently examining his Afro-Cuban roots while also finding new avenues to explore. His stunning collaborations with Mali’s Fatoumata Diawara are one such example, and there are plenty more on his latest release, Yesun, which includes collaborations with Cuban rapper Danay Suarez and US sax supremo Joe Lovano, among others.
Check out the video for “AGGUA”, from Yesun above. With a moody Cuban-set video, the track’s simple lyrical mantra is to “rumbar”, “guayarachar”, “gozar”, or in other words, cut loose and have some fun.
Fonseca is currently touring Europe with plenty of shows still to come in France, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Spain and Netherlands, including stand-out shows at London’s EartH on 1 December and Paris’ Salle Pleyel on 24 March 2020.
