Vamos Festival announces Latin Line-Up for 2011

By 19 April, 2011

VAMOS! Festival is returning to the North East of England for another great line-up of Latin and Lusophone activities. As well as a Tyne Carnival there will be plenty of music and films and opportunities to improve your dance skills. Read here for the full line-up and find out out picks of the festival.

VAMOS! 2011 launches with the very first Tyne Carnival procession through the streets of Newcastle from 11am on Saturday 4 June starting on Northumberland Street with live Latin American music, colourful costumes, dance and percussion! Acts include Rumba NE, Dale Burundanga Ensemble, Mezze Mundo, World Beaters Music Samba Band and Newcastle University Salsa Band, Sports for Youth Academy!

The North East Brazilian Community will be celebrating Festa Junina, one of the oldest and most
popular celebrations of the year in Brazil. The festivities at The Georgian Theatre in Stockton on Saturday 25 June include performances of Quadrilha – a typical dance with people dressed up as Caipiras (sort of cowboys) – stalls with typical Brazilian food and drinks and games for children.

One of the big highlights of the festival is a series of films at The Star and Shadow including Revolución, a series of 10 Mexican short films (including one directed by Gael Garcia Bernal), Gigante – a Uruguayan comedy, Birdwatchers about the relationship between the Guarani indigenous people and their landowners in Mato Grosso Do Sul, and Abel, another Mexican film though this time with a comedic touch.

A special A Peña Flamenca event at Dance City on Saturday 11 June will recreate Dance City as a magical Flamenco space for one day only with a special evening performance and daytime classes for all ages. Demonstrating why Flamenco was recently designated as a unique and valued treasure by UNESCO are an amazing line-up of professional Flamenco artists including Mayte Beltrán.

There will also be live music from global Chilean electronic artist Matias Aguayo (Comeme) from Kompakt records – performing outdoors at both Newcastle’s Grey’s Monument and The Tyne Bar. Matias has held ‘Bumbumbox’ parties all over Latin America transforming familiar public spaces into free, friendly, celebratory spaces. This is the first time Matias has brought a Bumbumbox party to the UK and for just a few hours on Friday 17 June Newcastle City Centre will sway to the sounds of contemporary Latino culture! He has collaborated with North East artist Capracara (DFA/Soul Jazz Records) utilising online social tools to develop a new electronic music commission to be performed live at this special outdoor Bumbumbox event. Matias will also give a lunchtime talk about his pioneering music project and later DJ at the now legendary Tyne Bar party on Saturday 18 June.

VAMOS closes with one of Spain’s hottest acts Fuel Fandango at the Mouth of The Tyne Festival on Sunday 10th July followed by its closing party at Crusoes Bar on Longsands Beach with fantastic Cuban musician Roberto Poveda who combines forms of Cuban music including Son, Bolero, Rumba and Timba along with Jazz, R n B and Rap resulting in a sound that is all his own.
