Jazz FM presents Azymuth, the kings of tropical jazz funk for one night special at London’s Jazz Café

On Monday 25th October 2010, kings of tropical jazz funk Azymuth, will take to the stage for a one-off special at Camden’s Jazz Café, following four successful decades at the top of their game. Established as one of the most exciting bands in the world, with 20 albums in 35 years Azymuth’s legion of followers will be entertained at the London hotspot for just £15. The legendary three-piece electric funk jazz group from Brazil are best known for their infectious sound, Samba Doido, meaning ‘Crazy Samba’.

Formed in 1972, the band comprises Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboards, Alex Malheiros and Ivan Conti on bass, guitars and drums, percussion respectively. Pianist, songwriter and band leader, Bertrami is famed for his unique playing and writing style. He is credited for the intensity and dynamic approach behind Azymuth long standing rein. Conti, known as Mamao to his friends is the incredibly energetic drummer, and the real hardcore Carioca of the trio. Meanwhile, Malheiros, one of the original groove masters learnt his trade playing with the master of the Brazilian swing, Ed Lincoln.

Currently signed to Far Out Recordings, Azymuth have performed, toured and recorded with musicians like Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Deodato and Stevie Wonder to name a few.

Azymuth are based in Brazil and continue to tour Europe taking in famous venues including Paris’ New Morning, Blue Note of Milan, New York and Tokyo. The trio have also graced top jazz festivals Monterrey, Montreux, North Sea Jazz and Glastonbury and have been praised for delivering samba-driven subliminal sounds.
