RARO 04: DJ Cal Jader

By 23 October, 2020

Without Cal Jader, London’s Latin American cultural landscape would be a lot less vibrant. His non-profit organisation Movimientos – which hosts seminal nights at Notting Hill Arts Club and the adored Love Carnival – has been involved in major musical collaborations with the likes of Manu Chao, Fania Records and Lokkhi Terra, as well as providing a platform for film releases alongside Soda Pictures, Dogwood and Lions Gate Films. An associated partner of festival producers Continental Drifts and their Global Local project, Jader’s Movimientos is inextricable from the major Latin music events in the capital. Meanwhile, under their moniker, they’ve hosted the likes of La Perla, Liniker E Os Caramelows and Gilles Peterson’s Havana Culturaproject. Independent of Movimientos, Jader is a celebrated DJ in his own right, constantly fusing and updating rhythms rooted in Latin folklore and urban, contemporary dance music. He’s a popular figure at the likes of Glastonbury, Bestival and Secret Garden Party, as well as in London, where he has supported bands such as Manu Chao & Radio Bemba, Calle 13, Ska Cubano and Novalima. We’re thrilled to have him in the hot seat for this week’s raro mixtape.

“A helter skelter ride through a selection of 45s from Peru tearing through some juicy big band Cumbia, psychedelic Chicha and Guaracha featuring some bigger names like Los Mirlos, Los Destellos and Los Hijos del Sol plus some more obscure cuts from the vaults. “

This mix series plays on the Hispanic and Lusophone homonym, “Raro”. “Raro” holds two meanings in Spanish and Portuguese: “rare” and also “strange”. Sounds & Colours’ Raro Series is a crate-diggers’ mix series which embraces both meanings. Over the course of on hour, our guest DJ will delve into Latin America’s unknown, underappreciated and unbelievable music and reveal its hidden gems.
