DJ Bitman, Monareta, King Coya, Poncho and Isa GT remix “Genius of Love” on new Tom Tom Club remix project

By 18 August, 2010

Nacional Records will be releasing Genius of Live on September 28th, the new album by Tom Tom Club. The album will feature tracks from classic album Live at the Club House as well as a Latin alternative remix tribute to the perennial classic “Genius of Love.”

The bonus disc will include contributions from Colombia’s Monareta and Isa GT, Chile’s DJ Bitman in addition to King Coya and Poncho, both from Argentina. Other remixers include Money Mark, Ozomatli, Señor Coconut, Kinky and the Mexian Institute of Sound.

All of these artists will be remixing “Genius of Love”, a song originally recorded in 1981 when Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth took a break from their normal job of playing in Talking Heads to retire to Jamaica and create what has since become a dance classic; a song which has been sampled by artists as diverse as Mariah Carey (for her hit song “Fantasy”) and Grandmaster Flash. Chris Frantz had this to say about its enduring popularity:

“Genius Of Love” is a song that really has taken on a life of its own. It is not just about dancing or getting down. It’s about musical salvation; that a life can be saved by funky music. When we were first introduced to Grandmaster Flash, he said, “You’re going to hear a lot of people using this track.” Of course, we had no idea how right he would turn out to be.

Here is the video for the song. I think it’s impossible to ever get tired of listening!
